I really enjoy traveling to and living in foreign countries. As a result, I have been to the following countries:
- Australia (1993, 2000)
- Austria (1973, 1987, 2008)
- Bahamas
- Belgium (1987)
- Canada (1989, 1992, 2007, 2009, 2011)
- China (2006)
I traveled to Shanghai to give a full day tutorial on safety and security requirements at the 28th International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE). The location was great, a convention center right on the river. It was nextdoor to the Oriental Pearl, from which I had an excellent view of the city and all of its skyscrapers including over a dozen that were under construction. One of my favorite memories is taking a boat ride along the canals through to a small town and visiting a silk factory where I bought a beautiful bathrobe. I stayed in a small cheap hotel a couple of miles from the conference venue so I got lots of exercise walking back and forth. - England (1973, 1987, 1993, 1994, 1996, 2015)
- Estonia
- Denmark (1987)
- France (1973, 1994, 2005, 2008)
- Germany [West and East (1974)] (1981, 1983, 1987)
- Greece [Crete] (2012)
IN 1912, spoke at a the The 11th IASTED International Conference on Software Engineering at the absolutely wonderful five-star Aldemar Knossos Resort on the north coast of Crete. While there, I took scuba lessons at the co-located Scubakreta Diving Center and dived in the reefs in the nearby Bay of Malia.
I also was able to cross off a major item of my bucket list when I toured the ruins of the palace of Knossos, the capital of the Minoan Empire. When the volcano at Santorini exploded, the resulting tidal wave destroyed the Minoan culture and became the source of the myth of Atlantis. The archeological museum in Herculaneum was great.
Finally, the conference bused us up the mountains to a traditional Greek tavern for a great dinner, wine, and dancing. - Holy See [Vatican City]
